Yorkshire U14 Girls team - stunning victory to win the National Title !
Five counties contested the title - Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Worcestershire, Surrey and Kent. Yorkshire were fielding a full strength team but Kent were also strong. In round 1 the girls had a sensational start, winning 6/6 to take a 1½ point lead over Kent.
In round 2 we were again undefeated with 4 wins and 2 draws, and took a 2 point advantage going into the last round. However, there were two crucial head to head matches against Kent in the third round so nothing was guaranteed. On board 6 Anna Cunningham was defeated by the Kent player, and then Megumi Parbrook fell to a shock defeat on board three. Amy Greenhough, Rebekah Brown and Evie Hollingworth completed victories, but with Kent winning five it all came down to the final board 2 match between Francesca Fozard and the Kent board 2. With all other matches long since finished the pressure was on. A victory for either girl would give their team the title, but a draw would tie the competition, with Yorkshire winning the tie break on board count. In a nail biter Francesca kept her cool under pressure to ease through a passed pawn and win the title for Yorkshire.
A fantastic achievement - well done to all the girls - no one scored less than 2/3 and Evie and Rebekah - both members of the 2006 team that also won the title - scored 3/3.
